Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC)
At Summerston Childcare, we use the GIRFEC approach in our services.
At the heart of the GIRFEC approach is the commitment to ensuring every child in our care is Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible, Included (Known as the Wellbeing Indicators). These wellbeing indicators are set in the context of the ‘four capacities’ which are at the heart of Curriculum for Excellence. The four capacities are successful learners, responsible citizens, confident individuals and effective contributors. We have implemented GIRFEC in our practice with staff, parents and children being fully involved in its implementation.
Summerston Childcare promote healthy eating and healthy lifestyles. We healthy snacks in all our bases and a well balanced lunch menu in our family learning centre. Our family learning centre is a recognised ‘Smile Nursery’ working alongside NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to encourage children to look after their teeth.
We further promote outdoor play and make good use of local parks, play areas, playgrounds and pitches to encourage the children to participate in active learning. We have recently acquired a gardening bed in a community facility where we will take the children to learn to plant and grow their own fruit and veg.
